1. What famous travellers of the past do you know?
I know that there were a lot of famous travellers in the past. They are from different countries and epochs but never were less they had much in common. In fact, they were all brave people, they loved the thrill of adventure, excitement. Among foreign travellers I must mention vikings [‘vaikinz] who travelled across northern seas and discovered many islands there. Probably, the bravest among them was Erik the Red.
Secondly, everybody know the name of Christopher Columbus who made several voyages looking for a sea way to India. Insread of that he discovered America. Columbus didn’t know about himself. That’s why the contitent was named after another great traveller Amerigo Vespucci from Italy.
As for Africa, it was explored by Livingstone and Vasco de Gama. Australia and New Zeland was explored by James Cook, the arctic and anterctic by Sedov, Lazarev, Bellinsgauzen (Беллинсгаузен). I’m proud to tell you that some of this surname are of Russian explores. I can name Przhevalsky (Пржевальский) and Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky who devoted their lives to the exploration of Asia. So, that’s what I can tell you about famous travellers of the past.
